Kinja'd!!!

There is a “project” 944 for a fairly nice price. It seems like these should be easy to wrench on (inline engine in the front) but also potentially a headache (rear transaxle/clutch placement). Good candidate to learn to wrench on?

I already have my MR2 as a daily and access to my Mercedes as backup. Having a non-running “project” seems manageable these days. What say y’all? I do have time this summer for some car shenanigans...

Well, K-roll should be able to talk to you about them, as can Steph if she stops by. Dusty might know a thing or two from spending so much time in one.

Me, I just know I’ve always wanted one. It’s my favorite Porsche.

I looked at the 951 a long while back and was turned off by the maintenance frequency, especially balance shafts and stuff you don’t have to think about on a modern car.

My good friend had an ‘86 when I was in high school (‘95-‘96) and the repair and maintenance bills were outrageous. And I came from a family of all German cars.

It’s made by Porsche.

And it was driven by the dude in sixteen candles

Thry are unquestionably my favorite Porsche, but I really don’t know a lot about them. I do know changing the clutch is a freaking nightmare on them. It’s something like a 30 hour(?) job.

Not for the faint of heart.

I still can’t believe there’s such a thing as a clutch with a rubber damping element...

Great to drive, body is galvanized (no rust on mine). Hard to wrench on? not particularly..... but parts very$$$ and they have a huge issue with the timing and balance belts. Recommended replacement every 35k miles, service is $3,000 or $1,000 in parts and special tools if you do it yourself. Honestly? Get a 300zx or an 80s f-body and you will thank me later.

Also I crashed mine randomly on a wet road, just turning a corner. Something something shifting weight distribution. Take that for whatever it is worth.

I’ve owned and tracked a 944 turbo for 18 years. Have done almost all work on it myself. It’s not bad to work on but you need to know that it’s German. That means almost everything is serviceable which is great to learn how to wrench but lots of things are hard to get to and sometimes require special tools. Clutch is a great example. It’s not hard at all but it does take forever.

Parts are usually affordable with a handful of exceptions. Some parts are no longer made. Internet knowledge is good but tends to be old fashioned; more forum based, very little if anything on YouTube.

It’s not fox body mustang-easy to work on but definitely DIY-able for just about everything.

I posted a few times about mine if you look back. It was a fun car and pretty easy to wrench on but it did give me a headache or two. I would buy one again though.

I wonder what is causing this one to not run; it could be easy like a crank position sensor or it could be some electrical gremlin.

I bet that car is loud with the stripped interior.

Don’t have person experience with them, but I’d say no to anything with early fuel injection. I’d get something from the 90s and has cheaper and more available parts.

Offer $700? Reasonable price, no-start problem seems trouble-shootable to me. Spend some quality time with the car, the factory service manual (which is online in Dane-glish!) and Clark’s Garage (also online) and you’ve got a good parsh!

I like them, especially the S2, but parts and non-DIY maintenance come with the Porsche premium.

I’ve posted on mine a bit. I paid $600 for a non-running project a couple of years ago. They are not simple cars and have a lot of places to go wrong - particularly in the electronics. They are a great car to learn about Bosch fuel injection, however. Outside of the electronics, they are fairly robust. But, small things like oil leaks are cumbersome to fix if you diy or very expensive if you pay someone else. They are not for beginners or those with a challenged budget. I’m into mine for about $6k now and it’s currently inop due to a failed DME ( not just the relay.
